Current situation in Dominican Republic after the passage of Hurricane Irene.

San Cristobal. At this moment is not raining in most of the provinces of the country; however, the National Office of meteorology (ONAMET) has prognosticated a partly cloudy sky with the occurrence of weak to moderate showers during morning time and hopes it decreases by this afternoon. It maintains in alert the border zones, and villages located on the southern slopes of the Cordillera Central, where moderate showers will continue throughout the day; 24 provinces are still in a state of red alert (top) and the eight remaining yellow (moderate).

The flood provoked by the intensive rains as the reminiscence of the passage of Hurricane Irene tropical started Tuesday night 23 to Wednesday 24 causing several damages on people and their properties. As a matter of fact, news inform that at least four people have died as a direct consequence, including three in the town of San Cristobal, 30 Km southwest of Santo Domingo; one of these was a pregnant woman who was swept by rising waters of river Yubazo. Another dead was in El Seibo, 135 kilometers east  of the capital.

The COE (The Emergency Operation Center), who manage the emergency situation in the Dominican Republic, is reporting that more than 37,700 people remain evacuated today in the country, where heavy rains left from Hurricane Irene isolated 88 communities and more than 2,200 homes are damaged. Also, the overflowing of rivers Yubazo and Nigua in San Cristobal have damage roads and broken two bridges. In the province of San José de Ocoa, 93 km southwest of Santo Domingo, the town is in state of emergency due to heavy rains that have lingered for more than 20 continuous hours.

Hot meals for People in shelters that have lost their homes and have not eaten properly since Wednesday 23rd

Food Provisions for at least two weeks for displaced families with children under 6 years old.
